Özet (abstract)
OBJECTIVE: To examine the mythological, literary, folkloric, religious, and popular culture origins of eponymous terminology in otolaryngology and explore how these narrative associations continue to influence modern surgical education and clinical practice. DATA SOURCES: Published otolaryngology educational materials, historical texts, and peer-reviewed literature addressing eponymous anatomic landmarks, syndromes, radiographic findings, and reconstructive terminology associated with mythology, folklore, classic literature, religion, and cinema. REVIEW METHODS: A narrative historical review was performed using search terms including otolaryngology, eponym, mythology, classic literature, folklore, and legends. Terms were analyzed chronologically and thematically with attention to etymology, narrative origin, and present-day clinical relevance within otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. RESULTS: Numerous commonly used otolaryngologic terms derive from shared cultural narratives. Classical mythology informs terms such as the pterion, labyrinth, philtrum, Cupid's bow, and Lyre sign, linking anatomy and pathology to Greco-Roman mythic imagery. Religious and artistic traditions contribute terminology including Adam's apple and cherubism. Folklore and legend underpin entities such as Crocodile Tears syndrome, Ondine's curse, witch's chin, and pixie ear deformity, while modern popular culture has shaped descriptors including Pickwickian syndrome, Orphan Annie eye nuclei, Andy Gump deformity, and Spock brow. CONCLUSIONS: These eponyms serve not only as historical artifacts but also as cognitive and visual heuristics that condense complex anatomy, phenotype, and pathophysiology into memorable narrative constructs. Preserving awareness of these cultural roots enhances surgical education by leveraging the proven mnemonic power of storytelling and reminds clinicians that the language of medicine remains inseparable from the broader human experience.
