Short summary
The spawning hum of the boxfish Ostracion meleagris differs fundamentally from the hum produced when handled, based on synchronized video and acoustic recordings of 13 spawning events.

Key points
- Boxfish have diverse acoustic repertoires, including sounds during spawning and handling.
- The reproductive component of boxfish sounds was previously poorly documented.
- Synchronized video and acoustic recordings analyzed 13 spawning events of Ostracion meleagris.
- The 'spawning hum' was quantitatively characterized and placed within the reproductive sequence.
- The spawning hum differs fundamentally from the disturbance-induced hum in hand-held individuals.

Abstract
Abstract Boxfishes possess one of the most diverse acoustic repertoires described among teleosts, including sounds emitted during spawning, agonistic interactions and handling. However, the reproductive component of this repertoire remains poorly documented. By analysing synchronized video and acoustic recordings from 13 spawning events involving three Ostracion meleagris Shaw 1796, we quantitatively characterize the spawning hum, place it within the reproductive behavioural sequence and show that it differs fundamentally from the disturbance‐induced hum previously described in hand‐held individuals.
