Yan Fu "Görünmez Eli" Görünür mü Kıldı? Çeviri, Çıkarma ve Smithçi Ekonominin Geç Qing Çin'indeki Kavramsal Kabulü

Qing Guo, Tianqi Su, Shisheng Lyu

Kısa özet

Yan Fu'nun Ulusların Zenginliği'nin 1901 tarihli çevirisinde "görünmez el"in yer almaması, bir yanlış çeviri değil, Geç Qing Çin'inin entelektüel bağlamı içinde kasıtlı bir kavramsal yeniden çerçevelemedir.

Ana noktalar

  • "Görünmez el"in kanonik statüsü, 20. yüzyılda oluşan bir yorum sürecinin sonucudur.
  • Yan Fu'nun çevirisini 20. yüzyıl liberalizmi merceğinden değerlendirmek anakroniktir.

Özet (abstract)

This article revisits the longstanding question of why the “invisible hand”—now often considered emblematic of Adam Smith’s thought—was omitted in the Chinese enlightenment thinker and translator Yan Fu’s 1901 translation of The Wealth of Nations. Rather than interpreting the omission as a mistranslation or ideological rejection, the article treats it as a deliberate act of conceptual reframing, situated within both Yan’s rhetorical practice and the intellectual concerns of late Qing China. Drawing on Smith’s metaphorical usage in The History of Astronomy, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and The Wealth of Nations, and applying the method of genetic criticism to Yan’s marginalia in Thorold Rogers’ edition of Smith’s text, we argue that the “invisible hand” did not occupy a central theoretical role for Smith himself, and that its later elevation to canonical status reflects a twentieth-century process that retroactively shaped our understanding of the text. We conclude that it is anachronistic to evaluate Yan’s translation in late Qing China through the lens of twentieth-century liberalism, and that interdisciplinary approaches are essential to understanding how classical economic ideas were refracted through language, culture, and historical contexts.
