Özet (abstract)
Abstract Educational inequality remains a pervasive and deeply entrenched global issue, with youth from vulnerable and marginalised backgrounds disproportionately affected. Despite the significant challenges that hinder the academic progress of many young people, often reinforcing cycles of social exclusion and economic vulnerability, some students demonstrate the capacity to excel academically, effectively defying the odds. This study seeks to examine the key structural and interpersonal factors that enable such students to achieve positive educational trajectories. Adopting a qualitative narrative research design, the research draws on two sets of semi‐structured interviews with both young people from vulnerable backgrounds and adults who played a role in their educational success ( n = 16). Findings identify four broad categories of factors shaping student success: (1) personal attributes such as resilience, intrinsic motivation, clear goals and a strong sense of purpose; (2) parental expectations and support; (3) teachers' emotional support, involvement and constructive feedback and (4) peer support. Of these, two factors emerged as consistently significant across all cases. First, parental expectations, underpinned by trust in their child's abilities and a high valuation of education, proved essential. Second, the depth and longevity of student–teacher relationships were crucial, with teachers' emotional investment, trust and sustained support providing enduring sources of motivation and encouragement. These insights have important implications for schools, teacher education and policy development. Schools should foster inclusive, high‐expectations cultures with long‐term mentoring and structured peer integration promoting cross‐cultural interaction. Teacher education, in initial and continuing training, should include socio‐emotional learning and pedagogical strategies for non‐native language learners. Context and implications Rationale for the study: Previous research has typically examined either the perspectives of disadvantaged young people or those of professionals supporting them, often focusing on barriers and deficits. This study brings together both viewpoints to identify the key factors, relationships and supports that enable successful outcomes for young people in contexts where early school leaving is prevalent. Why the new findings matter: Our findings suggest that educational success among disadvantaged young people is shaped by interconnected support systems rather than individual effort alone. Strong parental belief in education and meaningful teacher–student relationships are central to resilience, reinforced by academic, social and community supports that enabled positive educational outcomes. Implications for practitioners and policymakers: Schools need to prioritise mentoring, inclusive cultures and structured cross‐cultural peer activities to strengthen belonging and aspiration. Teacher education and professional development should embed socio‐emotional learning, strategies for supporting multilingual learners and approaches that sustain high expectations in disadvantaged contexts. Policymakers should sustain and strengthen financial supports that enable disadvantaged students to access higher education, ensuring they keep pace with rising participation costs. Increased investment in schools serving disadvantaged communities is also needed to support meaningful family engagement and strengthen home–school relationships that foster resilience and educational success.
