Özet (abstract)

This paper focuses on the effects of urbanization on the health of children. It is noted that although urbanization has several beneficial effects for the general urban population city living for children is the antithesis of growing up in a traditional family and community setting. In many of the industrialized countries accidents have been the main cause of childrens deaths. Overcrowded cities and towns have other health hazards particularly where there are insufficient health infrastructure arrangements such as the supply of adequate safe drinking water the removal of sewage and solid and liquid wastes from the environment and the deployment of adequately trained health inspection personnel. Food supply and eating and drinking patterns are also changed due to the modernization and advances in agricultural and industrial methods. Such change to Westernized diets has a deleterious effect on child health and the later development of chronic so-called lifestyle diseases of modern society. With regard to social behavior urbanization has contributed to the high level of concern in many countries about the negative impacts of the media and other technologies particularly because of their common content of violence eroticism and drug culture on childrens behavior.
