Individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, yet these benefits depend on comprehensive and accurate assessment to guide system selection. AAC assessment and intervention are inherently complex, requiring clinician expertise and adequate resources. Globally, clinicians report reservations and limited confidence in AAC implementation, often due to insufficient training and a lack of structured tools. Similar challenges are evident in Turkey, where limited awareness and scarce clinical and academic resources contribute to hesitancy. To address this gap, this study introduced the Communication, Language, Speech and AAC Assessment Form and explored speech and language therapists’ (SLTs) perspectives on its utility. In Phase 1, the form was piloted with 26 individuals with CCN, aged 6–58, representing diverse diagnoses. In Phase 2, qualitative interviews were conducted with nine SLTs of varying AAC experience. Thematic analysis revealed that clinicians predominantly relied on informal observations for AAC assessment and expressed uncertainty about implementation. When introduced to the form, however, participants described it as inclusive, guiding, and supportive. Participants emphasised the potential of the form to facilitate accurate identification of needs, informed clinical decision-making, and supported appropriate referrals. They also noted its potential to strengthen family participation, highlight individual strengths, and enable dynamic assessment. Although its length posed a practical challenge, the form was valued for promoting comprehensive evaluation. Overall, findings suggest that culturally sensitive, structured assessment tools can enhance clinician confidence and contribute to more systematic AAC practices in Turkey.
