Preverbal trauma as a history-dependent response architecture: integrating bioelectrical, epigenetic, and developmental mechanisms

Jarett Hancock, Deborah Becht-Buss

Ana noktalar

Preverbal trauma occurs while neural, endocrine, regulatory, and stress-responsive systems are still developing, allowing early experience to influence later function even when autobiographical or linguistic access to the original event is limited. This article proposes a history-dependent response architecture as a mechanistic framework for understanding such developmental embedding. Rather than treating preverbal trauma as a memory stored in a distinct somatic substrate, a persistent abnormal resting membrane potential, or a single enduring biological state, the framework proposes that developmental experience can alter the evolving biological organization through which later inputs are transformed into physiological and behavioral responses. Evidence from early-life stress and developmental models is integrated across intrinsic neuronal physiology, synaptic organization, endocrine signaling, activity-dependent transcription and chromatin regulation, glial processes, and circuit maturation. These mechanisms can interact across development without requiring the process that initially produces a change to remain the mechanism that later expresses its consequences. Persistence may involve continued pathway involvement, structural or circuit remodeling, regulatory priming, or compensation, while in some cases the biological substrate carrying the developmental effect may itself change across development. This perspective predicts that systems with similar resting or behavioral outputs may nevertheless differ in latent biological configuration and therefore diverge when exposed to a standardized later challenge. Such differences may appear in response threshold, gain, recruitment, adaptation, coordination, or recovery and may vary with developmental timing, sex, genotype, exposure structure, cell population, and subsequent environment. The framework therefore shifts experimental emphasis from identifying a single persistent biological scar to measuring developmental trajectories and input-response functions across time and context. Longitudinal, challenge-based, and causal designs can distinguish this account from simpler cumulative-exposure or persistent-variable explanations, making the proposed architecture testable, refinable, and rejectable.
