Özet (abstract)

Thoughts and feelings surrounding death and dying are commonly avoided, thus evidencing a need to develop improved approaches and perspectives on the topic. The film Fight Club has been used across many academic disciplines to discuss a range of societal, philosophical, and existential issues. However, to date, there exists no academic literature that has drawn specifically on the themes of death in the film in relation to authentic living. A thematic analysis of the film identified three death-related themes that illustrate the value and importance in developing death competence and death acceptance, and its influence on authentic living. Marla Singer is positioned as an angel of death as the Narrator moves through the story from being death-avoidant in the beginning, to developing death competence and acceptance. Psychological and philosophical concepts are used to highlight the benefits of developing death acceptance in relation to authentic living but are also contextualised and tensioned with common modern-day societal issues that introduce difficulties in doing so. The article makes a small but important contribution to the growing narratives around the benefits of reducing death anxiety, and more broadly, the efficacy of using film to communicate contemporary issues.
