This article examines the relationship between sought-after school zones and spatial in/justice in Aotearoa-New Zealand, challenging the country’s enduring self-image as an egalitarian society. It reveals how elite state schools, valued for their social prestige, drive socio-spatial divides that entrench privilege within specific urban spaces. By influencing housing markets and facilitating residential sorting, these schools contribute to the concentration of property wealth and social capital within their enrolment zones, transforming access to sought-after public education into an asset predominantly available to affluent families. This dynamic perpetuates cycles of advantage and exclusion, further complicating ideals of equality and fair opportunity. Mixed-methods were used with spatial analysis to examine property value patterns, community surveys to explore public attitudes, and qualitative interviews to capture lived experiences. This approach uncovers a self-reinforcing cycle in which zoning policies, housing demand, and school reputations perpetuate socio-economic stratification. The findings demonstrate that these interwoven systems of privilege deepen socio-economic inequalities, positioning access to sought-after education as a key driver of urban inequality and social immobility. Through the lens of Rawlsian spatial justice, this article frames school zoning as a fundamental urban challenge, illustrating how zoning policies extend beyond education to shape broader geographies of exclusion. While zoning in Aotearoa-New Zealand continues to be positioned as a tool for fairness, this study challenges that narrative, revealing its role in structuring urban inequality and calling for policy interventions that prioritise spatial justice over entrenched privilege.
