2026 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of James Hutton, whose 1788 article ‘Theory of the Earth’ is recognized as the foundation of geology. This volume commemorates Hutton's concepts of uniformitarianism, cycles of decay and renewal and deep time, highlighting where our understanding has been transformed through recent advances.
