Treatment of widespread fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) that challenges human health and ecosystem is of great importance. Photocatalysis is a potential advanced treatment option for degrading antibiotics even at low concentrations. Photocatalysts play a major influencing role in determining degradation efficiency of CIPRO. This study explores comparative photocatalytic performance of in-house synthesized and well-characterized (structural, morphological and optical properties) photocatalysts like TiO 2 , GOTiO 2 , NiTiO 2 and NiMnO 2 nano structures for degradation of CIPRO. Photocatalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method. Electron microscopic images confirm presence of Ni particles anchored to cuboid shaped TiO 2 and MnO 2 nanorods. Overall, CIPRO degradation efficiency follows a decreasing order GOTiO 2 >TiO 2 >NiMnO 2 >NiTiO 2 . In 120 min, 91.2% of CIPRO was degraded with GOTiO 2 , because of the high surface area and ability in preventing charge recombination. Ni doping reduced CIPRO degradation due to metal ion-driven charge recombination and drop in redox potential. GOTiO 2 , exhibited faster kinetics with a pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.0216 min −1 , while other photocatalysts had higher correlation towards pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Among others, surface area of photocatalyst was a significant parameter influencing photocatalytic degradation of CIPRO. Further studies are aimed to improve the CIPRO degradation efficiency with Ni-doped TiO 2 or MnO 2 by optimizing experimental parameters because of their potential in light absorption at visible range.
