Ana noktalar
PURPOSE: This study presents a proof-of-concept automated accessory designed to actuate selected functions of a standard Perkins Brailler. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The prototype uses push-type electromagnetic solenoids to operate the Brailler keys, a gear motor to support carriage return, and a computer-based interface that provides alphabetic text input with audio feedback. The work is framed as a preliminary hardware-and-software platform for exploring low-cost automation of Perkins Brailler operation, rather than as a validated assistive technology for learners with visual impairments. The engineering contribution is demonstrated through the high-level and low-level designs, the three-dimensional housing structure, the character-to-actuation mapping, and the functional implementation of the prototype. Initial bench testing was conducted by the researchers under controlled conditions using three alphabetic inputs, B, C, and D, with 10 repeated trials for each input. RESULTS: Across these trials, the entered characters were converted into the intended Braille cell outputs, and the corresponding audio feedback was produced as expected. CONCLUSIONS: The study did not include learners with visual impairment, Braille teachers, rehabilitation specialists, or other end users, and it did not collect quantitative measures of accuracy across the full character set, writing speed, embossing quality, latency, durability, safety, usability, or user satisfaction. The findings should therefore be read as preliminary evidence of functional feasibility and as a basis for future technical refinement, full character-set testing, safety assessment, and user-centered evaluation.
