Özet (abstract)
London’s pleasure gardens of Vauxhall, Cremorne, and Ranelagh were widely admired and copied throughout the world. The larger nineteenth-century American cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston, and New Orleans all had several, if not many, pleasure gardens. In contrast, Boston only had one, Washington Gardens, which was unusual for a city of its size and one that took great pride in being on the forefront of intellectual debate and embracing new ideas. This article explores the life and evolution of Boston’s only pleasure garden, and some of the reasons why pleasure gardens did not enjoy the same popularity as other cities. It argues that the city’s culture, spatial layout, and competition limited the proliferation of pleasure gardens in general, but the main obstacle to the individual success of Washington Gardens was its size and location next door to the Boston Common.
