Özet (abstract)
The history of middle school general music in the United States reflects evolving educational ideologies, curricular trends, and sociocultural forces that have shaped the function and value of music within public schooling. This paper traces the development of general music at the junior high/middle school level from its emergence in the early twentieth century through the present day, considering how broader changes in adolescent education, music education philosophy, and national education policy influenced its purpose and design. By synthesizing textbooks, curricular guides, academic publications, federal policy documents, and foundational histories, I construct a historically informed review of middle school general music. Rather than presenting this trajectory as linear or inevitable, this inquiry attends to the cultural, institutional, and ideological forces that shaped which musical practices were legitimized in schools and which were positioned at the margins. Special attention is given to the role of interdisciplinary reform efforts such as the middle school movement, as well as federal initiatives like No Child Left Behind and the Every Student Succeeds Act. Ultimately, this historical inquiry underscores the need to critically reexamine the goals and structures of general music in middle schools to better serve diverse student populations today.
