An innovative approach for retreatment of prosthetically failing implant‐supported fixed prostheses with a complete digital workflow: A technique report

Sinem Kahya Karaca, Fatmanur Demir Boz, Kıvanç Akça

Short summary

A novel digital workflow enables the retreatment of failing implant-supported fixed prostheses by digitally superimposing extraoral scans of reused abutments onto intraoral scans, followed by graphic and real-time jaw movement recording for definitive prosthesis design.

Key points

  • A complete digital workflow is presented for the retreatment of failing implant-supported fixed prostheses.
  • Extraoral scans of reused abutments are digitally superimposed onto intraoral scans for precise data acquisition.
  • Jaw relation records include centric relation via gothic arch tracing and mandibular movements via a Jaw Motion Analyzer.
  • Definitive prostheses are designed and delivered based on these comprehensive digital records.

Abstract

Abstract Complications in fixed implant prostheses are frequently encountered and can negatively impact patients' quality of life. This technique outlines a complete digital workflow for the remake of full‐mouth, implant‐supported, cement‐retained restorations necessitated by esthetic and functional impairments. For the digital recording of reused abutments, a contemporary technique was employed in which extraorally scanned abutment data were digitally superimposed onto their corresponding counterparts in the intraoral scans. The jaw relation record procedures were completed in stages. Initially, centric relation was recorded using a graphic recording technique with a gothic arch tracer. This was followed by capturing mandibular movements under anterior guidance as real movement data using the Jaw Motion Analyzer (Zebris). Based on these digital records, the definitive prostheses were designed and delivered. Follow‐up was conducted at six months to evaluate clinical outcomes.
