Abstract
L'encyclopedie est peut-etre le plus delectable des genres litteraires. Du moins l'a-t-il ete. Les encyclopedies actuelles ne sont en general que de simple herbier de statistiques et de necrologies, destinees non pas a la lecture mais a une rapide consultation et a un oubli immediat. Les anciennes aspiraient en revanche a nous donner la somme des connaissances humaines. Diderot et d'Alembert couronnent cette tradition. Rappelons qu'il leur etait echu en partage le siecle le plus haut de la prose francaise, qu'ils contribuerent d'ailleurs a enrichir. Ou est la sagesse que nous avons abandonnee pour la connaissance ? Et ou la connaissance que nous avons abandonnee pour de l'information ? a pu deplorer T.S. Eliot. L'Encyclopedie garde toute sa vertu et son charme. Son but profond a ete la conquete de la liberte intellectuelle et morale. Elle a ete l'arme de cette conquete, et la guerre n'est pas finie. Jorge Luis Borges
