Key points
- Anesthesia complications are largely due to anesthesiologist errors, not anesthetic agents.
- Key factors for anesthesia safety include preoperative assessment, ASA risk scoring, and informed consent.
- Anesthetic practice is divided into four stages: premedication, induction, maintenance, and recovery.
- Successful anesthesia requires careful patient-specific protocol development based on species, age, and physiological status.

Abstract
Veterinary anesthesiology plays an important role in performing surgical procedures safely and painlessly, while taking animal welfare into consideration. In this chapter, the historical development, basic concepts, classification and clinical application principles of veterinary anesthesiology are comprehensively discussed. Although the practice of anesthesia experienced limited development until the 19th century, it made significant progress with the discovery of agents such as ether, chloroform, and chloral hydrate. Modern agents, including the discovery and use of barbiturates, have increased the reliability of veterinary anesthesia practices. Anesthetic applications are divided into four basic periods: premedication, induction, maintenance and recovery/recovery. During this process, a patient-specific anesthesia protocol should be developed based on factors such as the animal's species, age, physiological status, and the time required for the surgical procedure. It is emphasized that a large portion of anesthesia complications arise from anesthesiologist errors rather than the anesthetic agents themselves. Factors related to anesthesia-related deaths include a lack of knowledge and experience and inadequate patient monitoring, all of which are related to the anesthesiologist. Therefore, preoperative assessment, risk stratification (ASA score), and informed consent from patients are critical for anesthesia safety. Furthermore, monitoring vital signs, preventing complications, and postoperative patient monitoring also play a significant role in successful anesthesia administration. The resulting information demonstrates that veterinary anesthesia is a multidisciplinary procedure and a high-risk discipline that requires careful planning and implementation.
