Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) grow up in bilingual and bicultural environments, navigating both the Deaf and hearing communities. This study investigates the childhood family interactions of hearing individuals raised by Deaf parents, exploring their roles, responsibilities, and psychosocial experiences. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with adult CODAs to examine their experiences. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: (1) parental responsibility and role reversal, (2) communication dynamics, (3) childhood life experiences, and (4) sense of deprivation and encountered barriers. Findings suggest that CODAs often assume adult responsibilities at an early age, acting as interpreters, decision-makers, and caregivers within their families. While these roles contribute to the development of strong communication and problem-solving skills, they may also lead to social isolation, emotional burden, and delayed childhood experiences. Limited parental support in academic and social settings was also highlighted as a significant challenge. The study underscores the need for targeted support programs to enhance family communication and alleviate the burdens placed on CODAs.
