Abstract

Brewers Lagoon. A remote community on the northeastern coast of Honduras. March 16, 1894. That morning began like many others. The sun had only recently risen over the expansive coconut and orange groves planted by Charles Renton, an entrepreneur from the United States who came to Central America a few years earlier. Mr. Renton would soon start rounding up some cattle destined for transshipment to an adjacent settlement. Renton’s wife, Emma, prepared breakfast at the stove while the couple’s adopted daughter, eight-year-old Ella, played nearby. Little did Charles Renton know, as he washed and dressed, that this day would be the last of his life. A little after eight o’clock, the individuals who perpetrated what sensationalistic newspaper accounts in the United States came to call the “Renton Outrage” had arrived at the south shore of the inlet to begin their bloody work. “Here are those sons of bitches from the Cay,” Charles muttered once he spotted the gang skulking about his property. Almost in reply, Winchester barrels began to poke through the dense foliage in search of their intended target.1 The posse who showed up at the Rentons’ home that March morning were not Honduran citizens but rather a motley crew of French, Canadian, and US men employed by the Brewers Lagoon Wood and Produce Company, an entity known throughout the region as “the Company.” Backed by British capital, the Company paid Indigenous workers to cut mahogany from local forests and drag the timber down to the lagoon. There, it was squared, floated aboard ships, exported, and eventually transformed into the desks, tabletops, and wood paneling that adorned the homes of the world’s elite. It was a lucrative business, and the Company jealously guarded its concession, but Brewers Lagoon (see Figure 1) was sparsely populated and there was no reason why a coconut planter and a logging concern should not have been able to live in harmony. And yet, by 1894, the possibility of peaceful coexistence entirely evaporated.2 Brewers Lagoon (or Laguna de Brus) is marked with a star in the northeastern corner of the Honduran Mosquito Coast. When her husband went outside to milk a cow, he was met by a hail of rifle fire. One bullet passed through Charles’s abdomen, causing him to fall. “Jesus Christ! They have killed me!” he screamed. Emma quickly crawled out, grabbed his collar, and dragged him back into the house, though not before several scatter-gun blasts peppered her wrist and arm with pellets. As a gutshot Charles writhed in agony on the kitchen floor, the assassins held a council of war and decided to offer terms to the Rentons. The wounded man was to receive medical attention while Emma and little Ella would be granted safe passage out of Honduras.3 After several hours of tearful negotiations, the arrangements were finalized. Charles (see Figure 2) was hauled off to an outbuilding after Emma and Ella were told to pack only what they could carry. Bidding farewell to her husband, Emma found herself being force-marched into the jungle, south toward Nicaragua, with Ella in tow. Only too late did she realize the folly of trusting these armed killers determined to finish their deadly deed. “We have started this thing,” they were heard to reckon, and now “we have got to go through with it.”4 The sound of two gunshots in the distance caused Emma to turn back with worry; “that is the last of poor Mr. Renton” somberly intoned one of the party. Soon afterward, tiny flickers of flame became a wall of fire. Her home for the past seven years was burning to the ground. Emma remembered her tormentors “singing, shouting, laughing, and acting in a perfectly fiendish manner.”5 This woodcut image of Charles Renton accompanied many newspaper articles describing the grisly details of his murder. “Mrs. Renton’s Story,” Meriden Daily Journal, May 10, 1894.
