Key points

  • Heptapterus carmelitanorum was found in its type locality and a new adjacent locality in southeastern Brazil.
  • A total of 18 specimens were captured during surveys conducted between 2022 and 2025.
  • The species' known distribution has been expanded within the upper Rio Paraná basin.
  • The recommended conservation status is Vulnerable (VU D2) due to restricted distribution and small population.

Abstract

Abstract Heptapterus carmelitanorum (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) is a catfish species described based on four specimens, all captured in a small stream from the upper Rio Paraná basin, southeastern Brazil. Due to the limited available material, and its highly restricted geographical distribution, new sampling was required to broadly evaluate the conservation status of the species. Between 2022 and 2025, we sampled 86 reaches within the upper Rio Paraná, Rio São Francisco, Rio Doce, and Rio Paraíba do Sul basins in southeastern Brazil. We captured a total of 18 specimens in the stream where the species is known to occur in the upper Rio Paraná basin. In addition, we found the species in a new locality within the same drainage, expanding its known distribution. Based on the results of our surveys, we currently recommend that H. carmelitanorum should be categorized as Vulnerable under criterion D2 (VU D2).
