Abstract

This is the 26th supplement since publication of the 7th edition of the Check-list of North American Birds (American Ornithologists’ Union [AOU] 1998). It summarizes decisions made between 1 May 2025 and 10 August 2026 by the American Ornithological Society’s (formerly American Ornithologists’ Union) Committee on Classification and Nomenclature—North and Middle America. The Committee has continued to operate in the manner outlined in the 42nd Supplement (Banks et al. 2000). During the past year, Rosa Alicia Jiménez took a leave of absence from the committee. Changes in this supplement include the following: (1) 6 species (Apus affinis, Ichthyaetus audouinii, Ardeola ralloides, Circus cyaneus, Pernis ptilorhynchus, and Tachycineta albiventer) are added to the main list on the basis of new distributional information, including 1 transferred from Appendix 1; (2) 7 species (Numenius hudsonicus, Tringa inornata, Ardea egretta, Momotus castaneiceps, Mitrephanes aurantiiventris, Cistothorus paludicola, and Turdus ardosiaceus) are added to the main list because of splits from species already on the list; (3) 1 species (Setophaga aestiva) is added to the main list because of a split from a species already on the list, and the English name of that species (S. petechia) is transferred to S. aestiva; (4) 3 species names are changed (to Pterodroma deserta, Camptostoma flaviventre, and Deconychura typica) because of splits from extralimital species; (5) the English names and distributional statements of 3 species (Onychorhynchus coronatus, Formicarius nigricapillus, and Tunchiornis ochraceiceps) are changed because of splits from extralimital species; (6) the distributional statements of 3 species (Bubo virginianus, Myiopsitta monachus, and Fringilla coelebs) are changed because of splits from extralimital species; (7) 1 genus (Nannus) is added due to a split from another genus, resulting in changes to 2 scientific names (N. pacificus and N. hiemalis); (8) 1 genus (Thryorchilus) is lost due to merger with another genus, resulting in a change to 1 scientific name (Troglodytes browni); (9) the English group names of 2 genera (Tunchiornis and Myioborus) are changed, resulting in changes to the English names of 4 species; (10) 5 species (Apus pallidus, Zapornia pusilla, Pelecanus onocrotalus, Botaurus stellaris, and Parus cinereus) are added to Appendix 1; (11) 1 species (Apus nipalensis) is deleted from Appendix 1 due to merger with a species added to the main list; and (12) 1 species (Margarops fuscatus) is added to the list of species known to occur in the United States.
