Abstract
Political texts that represent citizens’ will, beliefs, and opinions are a foundation of democracy. Since the advent of social media platforms, public political texts produced by citizens (CPPT) have become widely accessible to researchers. This study proposes a review of 2,785 academic articles published in English-language journals between 2014 and 2022. It identifies data sources, methods, and tools for collecting and analyzing CPPT. It contextualizes the niche the CPPT research occupies in academic literature and the prevalent topics and theories in this research strand. It concludes by discussing avenues of CPPT research and the challenges this field faces.
