Net Migration By Age: The Flow-Difference Approach for Estimation and Forecasting

Hana Ševčíková, James Raymer, Adrian E. Raftery

Short summary

The new flow-difference method accurately estimates and forecasts age-specific net migration even without direct data on in- and out-migration flows.

Key points

  • Introduces the flow-difference method for estimating age-specific net migration.
  • Models age-specific in- and out-migration flows indirectly.
  • Achieves improved net migration predictions compared to methods using only net totals.
  • Enables age-specific net migration estimation even with absent flow data.

Abstract

We present the flow-difference method to disaggregate total net migration by age. It models the age-specific flows of in-migration and out-migration to derive age-specific net migration, even in the absence of data on such flows. We show that the resulting net migration predictions are greatly improved over existing methods that model only the net migration totals.
