Özet (abstract)

Purpose Noise in aging residential communities is a challenge of architectural management; yet, research overlooks residents’ cognitive mechanisms. This study examines how attributing noise to building deficiencies or neighbor misconduct shapes coping strategies, linking subjective perception to the built environment. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods design was applied in two old communities in China. Q-methodology with 50 participants sorting 40 statements identified strategy types; 41 grounded theory interviews revealed attributional logics and tipping points. Findings Six distinct strategies are identified. Strategy selection is guided by attributional logic. Residents attributing noise to structural defects of the building typically adopt passive endurance or public complaint, often directing demands toward property management and soundproofing retrofits. Those attributing noise to neighbors’ malice tends toward confrontational or evidence-based retaliation, transforming acoustic deficiencies into interpersonal disputes. Strategy transitions from passive endurance to active coping are triggered by three critical thresholds: the breach of physical and mental health, the breakdown of neighborhood reciprocity and threats to vital living interests. Originality/value This study reframes community noise as an issue of built environment performance issue. It offers a novel lens for architectural management. Guiding residents from moral blame toward structural awareness can redirect noise grievances into constructive demands for acoustic retrofits, proactive property maintenance and community-based soundscape governance, ultimately preserving both the physical fabric and social cohesion of aging communities.
