Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine sessions offered at state music educator associations’ (MEAs) annual conferences designed to support early-career music teachers (ECMTs). We used qualitative content analysis to examine MEA conference programs ( N = 47) held between August 2023 and August 2024. We categorized conference sessions aimed at ECMTs ( N = 255) according to target audience, mode of delivery, topic, and content. Most sessions followed a clinic format, with the target audience closely divided between preservice teachers and early-career teachers. Four themes emerged in the analysis of session content: (a) unfocused content, (b) first-year teaching, (c) job search, and (d) mentoring. Recommendations for practitioners curating and presenting professional development sessions include focusing on research-based, specific topics; using active and collaborative presentation styles; and implementing strategies for effective mentorship programs.
