Abstract

This study aims to investigate the development and application of immersive technologies (ImTs) in dance education through a systematic review of existing empirical studies. The review addresses several inquiries: (a) the dance learning activities supported by ImTs, (b) the benefits of ImTs applications for dance learning experiences, and (c) their positive impacts on dance learning outcomes, as well as (d) the challenges and difficulties encountered during the implementation of ImTs in dance training practices. A total of 22 eligible studies were included through screening for further thematic analysis, providing insights for the inquiries across multiple levels. This study contributes to the body of knowledge in the field and enriches our understanding of the status of ImTs development and application in dance education. It provides a comprehensive overview of perceived advantages and challenges, guiding the practical integration of ImTs into instructional routines. Moreover, several suggestions are made for enhancing effective integration, drawing attention to the key points of the topic and signalling potential research directions in this interdisciplinary domain.
