Academic paper summarizer tools compared (2026): Scholarcy, SciSpace, Elicit, Consensus and Pofolia
Everyone who wants to know what a paper says without reading it asks the same question: which tool? The answer depends on the job. Below, five tools — one of them ours, said up front — compared on the same criteria: what the free tier gives, what the paid plan costs, which languages, and what the tool is really built for. Every price was taken from the vendor’s pricing page on 18 September 2026; check before you buy.
Short answer

Criteria
Five: (1) what the free tier actually allows, (2) the cheapest paid plan, (3) languages of the interface and the summaries, (4) the core job — upload-and-summarise, search engine, or daily feed, (5) source transparency — what text the summary is generated from and whether the source is linked.
Scholarcy
The classic upload-and-summarise tool: give it a PDF, a Word file or a link and it produces a structured summary with key findings and flashcards. The free tier is capped at 10 summaries; Plus is $4.99/month with a one-week trial. English interface; a library and a browser extension. Good for digesting one paper quickly, not for keeping up with a field — you find and bring the paper.
SciSpace
A platform more than a tool: Chat with PDF, literature-review tables, an AI writer, a citation generator. Credit-based; Premium is $12/month billed annually ($20 monthly) with 1,200 monthly credits, and the free tier is a limited trial. English interface. Breadth is the strength; the weakness is that everything spends credits and you have to keep track.
Elicit
A research assistant built for systematic reviews. The free tier gives unlimited search across 138M+ papers, unlimited summaries and chat with papers; the Research Agent and reports are limited. Pro is $49/month ($588/year) and unlocks a systematic-review workflow that screens 5,000 papers. English interface. If you are at the thesis or meta-analysis stage the free tier alone is valuable; it does not answer “what came out today?”.
Consensus
Answers “what does the evidence say?” from peer-reviewed papers and cites every sentence. Free: basic search, 10 Pro messages and 3 deep reviews a month; Pro $12/month ($144/year), Deep $45/month. English interface. The best tool for testing a claim against the evidence quickly; not for reading papers or building a library.
Pofolia
Our product, and a different approach from the other four. You do not upload a paper: you pick your fields and every day a selection from them arrives in your feed with short summaries in Turkish and English. Every card shows citation count, journal quartile (SCImago Q1–Q4) and field-weighted impact (FWCI); you can search 250M+ works (OpenAlex), every paper you save is summarised automatically, and notes and lists stay in sync between phone and web. “Ask the paper” answers only from the open-access full text and shows its quotes.

For an assignment where you need to understand one or two papers, the free tiers are enough: Scholarcy’s 10 summaries or Elicit’s unlimited ones. Writing a thesis, Elicit’s systematic workflow earns its price. A clinical or policy question, Consensus.
