How to judge a paper in ten seconds

Most of what you need to know about a paper before opening it sits in three numbers. None of them means “good paper” on its own — but together they narrow down what is worth your reading time.

Journal quartile (Q1–Q4)

This says where a journal sits among the journals of its own field. Q1 is the top 25%, Q4 the bottom 25%. The ranking is normalised within a field, so a medical journal is never compared directly against a mathematics one.

The catch: a quartile describes the journal, not the paper. Weak papers appear in Q1 journals and field-changing work appears in Q3 ones. Read it as an answer to “is this venue taken seriously?”, not to “is this paper good?”.

SJR — the journal’s prestige weight

SJR (SCImago Journal Rank) does not count all citations equally: a citation from a prestigious journal weighs more. The logic resembles web page ranking — who cites you matters more than how many cite you.

Treat SJR as a precision dial next to the quartile. Two journals can both be Q1 and still differ several-fold in SJR.

FWCI — field-weighted citation impact

FWCI compares a paper’s citations against the average for papers of the same field, year and type. 1.0 is exactly average; 2.0 means twice the citations of its peers.

Its value is that it makes comparison fair. Forty citations may be unremarkable in molecular biology and extraordinary in pure mathematics. A raw citation count hides that difference; FWCI tries to show it.

All three are sensitive to publication date. A paper published last month has had no time to accumulate citations — a low FWCI is not a verdict on quality. For recent work, lean on the journal signals; for older work, lean on the impact ones.

What they do not measure

None of them measures methodological soundness, whether the data was shared, or whether anyone reproduced the result. Whether a paper is actually trustworthy is settled by reading it. These numbers decide reading order, not whether to read.

  • Entering a new field: start with a few high-FWCI papers to find its reference points. Where to start is covered at length in a separate post.
  • Checking a specific claim: the methods section matters far more than any journal signal.
  • Scanning the current state of the art: filter to the last two years, ignore FWCI, look at the quartile.

There is also the case where a signal is simply absent: no quartile on a card means the journal was not found in Scimago’s list, not that it is bad. When that gap should count as a warning is separated out in the post on predatory journals.
