Ana noktalar

Goethe’s three Walpurgisnacht scenes in Faust are usually separated as demonic spectacle, satirical intermezzo, and classical phantasmagoria. Read together, they form a poetic sequence interpreted through Goethe’s conception of God-Nature (Gott-Natur), a non-systematic conception of divinity as immanent in living, metamorphic nature. The sequence moves from the expansion and interruption of demonic freedom on the Brocken, through a reconciliation of natural powers announced but withheld in “Walpurgis Night’s Dream,” to the attempted poetic return of God-Nature in the Greek Fabelreich. Religious and mythic traditions are not treated as evidence of an intact pagan cult; they supply historically contested symbolic materials that Goethe reshapes to examine modern subjectivity. The ballad “The First Walpurgis Night” clarifies how conflict over pagan natural festivity contributed to the motif’s demonic imagery, while the dramatic scenes transform mountain festivity, fairy comedy, sacred healing, divine genealogy, and metamorphosis into tests of Faust’s relation to limit. Greek soil revives him, but his desire for Helen turns participation into possession. The sequence thus stages religious continuity and contestation within literary form: inherited symbols remain available, yet their capacity to restore a divine-natural order depends on whether the modern subject can receive rather than master them.
