Abstract

Abstract We consider the optimal scaffold design problem associated with a previously considered, three-dimensional, time-dependent model for scaffold-mediated bone regeneration. We prove existence of optimal scaffold designs and present numerical evidence that optimized scaffolds mitigate stress shielding effects resulting from exterior fixation of the scaffold at the defect site.
