Short summary
6 mol% calcia-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (6Ca-TZP) processed below 1350°C exhibit high bending strength (> 1200 MPa) and moderate toughness (< 5 MPa√m), making it a potential substitute for 3Y-TZP in many standard applications.

Key points
- 6Ca-TZP processed below 1350°C shows high bending strength (> 1200 MPa) and moderate toughness (< 5 MPa√m).
- Sintering above 1350°C dramatically increases toughness (> 10 MPa√m) but halves strength (< 600 MPa).
- Higher sintering temperatures (> 1375°C) cause calcia segregation and grain growth, leading to transformation-dominated failure.
- Strict processing control is necessary for 6Ca-TZP to replace 3Y-TZP in standard applications.

Abstract
Calcia stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ca-TZP) represent a promising alternative to Y-TZP for medical and engineering applications, as they avoid the use of critical raw materials. However, the fundamental behavior of these materials is not yet fully understood. 6Ca-TZP material was hot-pressed at sintering temperatures between 1250 and 1400°C to determine the correlations between sintering conditions, microstructure, phase composition, transformation characteristics and mechanical properties. 6Ca-TZP retains a fine-grained microstructure, high bending strength (> 1200 MPa), and moderate toughness (< 5 MPa√m) up to 1350°C. Beyond this temperature, an exponential increase in toughness to > 10 MPa√m is observed, coupled with a decrease in strength to < 600 MPa. Above 1375°C, the segregation of calcia stabilizer and increasing grain size lead to destabilization, shifting the failure mechanism from defect-size to transformation-dominated failure. Consequently, 6Ca-TZP may be-a suitable substitute for 3Y-TZP in many standard applications, provided that processing conditions are strictly controlled.
