Abstract

This text comprehensively addresses the vital impacts of children's literature on children's language, aesthetic, mental, and social development, as well as the teaching processes of this field at various educational levels. The connection with literature, which begins within the family during early childhood, must be transformed into a permanent reading culture through the guidance of teachers during the preschool and primary school periods. The active use of folk literature elements such as poetry, fairy tales, legends, and the Stories of Dede Korkut in lessons is of critical importance for enabling children to perceive the narrative richness of Turkish and for instilling a sense of national identity. However, current practices in the educational system, such as Turkish textbooks and the 100 Essential Works list, remain insufficient in attracting children's interest because they contain mechanical, didactic, and rote-learning concerns rather than artistic and aesthetic quality. The fact that teachers and Turkish teachers, who play a key role in this process, lack adequate equipment in children's literature during their undergraduate education, combined with the low duration and credits of courses in higher education and the lack of practice, stands out as the most fundamental problem. Consequently, it is imperative to structure a higher education program that is based on practice rather than theory, incorporating the integration of theory and method, to support teachers with in-service training, and to ensure cooperation among universities, authors, and publishing houses for generations with aesthetic taste.
