Key points

  • Intramolecular O−H···O hydrogen bonding is a persistent feature in crystalline ortho-hydroxymethyl-hydroxy (hetero)arenes.
  • Steric effects are identified as a significant factor influencing the formation of these intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
  • The study combined crystallographic analysis of pyridoxine salts with a database survey of related compounds.

Abstract

Abstract A crystallographic study of pyridoxine salts, combined with a survey of ortho-hydroxymethyl-hydroxy arenes and heteroarenes in the Cambridge Structural Database, was used to evaluate the persistence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in crystalline ortho-hydroxymethyl-hydroxy (hetero)arenes. The presented analyses suggest that steric effects play a significant role in the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in this class of compounds.
