Abstract
Observational research that involves observers from the communities and contexts researchers aim to study can make research more valid while representing community views and interests. Developmental science is a key area where community-engaged approaches can make valuable contributions, especially considering the challenges inherent in observing children and families. This conceptual article proposes an approach for effectively gathering observational data while enhancing equity in science: Developmental Engaged Methods of Observation. This approach brings together insights from developmental science, participatory science research (which involves training community members to serve as data collectors who observe the world around them), and participatory action research (which centers the voices of the communities that are being studied). This article illustrates what the approach can look like by discussing several case studies from contemporary developmental research in families, schools, and everyday settings on topics like human development, academic integrity, and science identity. The Developmental Engaged Methods of Observation approach forwards new ways of thinking about developmental observation research that can bolster diversity in science, create new insight into developmental processes and mechanisms across contexts, and create opportunities for trust and partnership with stakeholders across a range of communities.
