Özet (abstract)

This study employs Ecological Systems Theory to understand how small school ecosystems influence the development of beginning teachers. It explores the role of individuals and of the school ecosystem in six small schools supporting the induction and professional development for beginning teachers in the first 2 years of their career. Focusing on interview data collected from rural and coastal schools in South-West and North-East England, it investigates individual and contextual factors to explore how staff in small schools may leverage potential advantages – such as close-knit relationships and a collaborative, supportive school culture – to develop adaptive strategies and navigate the challenges of limited capacity and resource. It also considers the evolving role of external support – the ‘middle-tier’ – as a mechanism to provide direct assistance to beginning teachers and the staff that support them. While situated within the English context, the study’s findings resonate with international evidence on the challenges that resource-limited contexts face. The insights offered may inform efforts to strengthen support for beginning teachers in similar settings in England and internationally.
