Abstract
Abstract: Entertainment science remains a mosaic of disconnected research streams, each generating valuable insights but lacking a cross-cutting mechanism to reveal their connections. Existing understandings do not link different areas of theory, such as research on entertainment’s appeal versus research on its maladaptive effects. This paper proposes that attending to how entertainment is made can bridge these streams. What entertainment is, on this view, is a technology: entertainment is a deliberately iterated system of superstimuli (unnaturally attention-grabbing stimuli that activate evolved cognitive mechanisms) that producers refine to capture audiences and serve their own goals. Drawing on predictive-mind frameworks from computational neuroscience, this paper treats attention as precision-weighted Bayesian inference and shows how entertainment taps that inference architecture using increasingly sophisticated superstimulus technologies. This view reveals attention capture as a common principle underlying diverse entertainment phenomena. It (a) provides a principled taxonomy that maps research domains onto the evolved mechanisms content activates, (b) reframes and resolves the paradox of suspense, (c) generates first-principles predictions about content evolution and cultivation effects, and (d) helps account for entertainment’s appeal. By identifying what unites disparate research traditions, this approach enables researchers across subfields to position their investigations within a shared theoretical landscape capable of generating cumulative, interconnected knowledge.
