Özet (abstract)
Academic stress has emerged as an alarmingly major problem in higher education due to its relation to students’ psychological well-being, academic achievement, retention and suicide risk. University students face constraints of hefty homework and high-stakes assessments, financial challenges, uncertain job prospects, social adjustment and family expectations. Chronic stress without support can lead to emotional distress, hopelessness, and suicidality. Hope is a possible significant psychological resource for protection, including the identification of relevant goals, the discovery of pathways to those goals, and the maintenance of drive to pursue those goals despite challenges. In this opinion paper, we discuss the policy implications of the association of academic stress, hope, and suicidal ideation among university students, and argue for a more integrated approach to mental health on campus. It highlights the shortcomings of approaches that respond primarily with counselling when psychological diseases reach crisis point. Prevention and early detection and developing academic environments and access to professional support in a timely way should be paid more attention to. The research also recommends universities consider academic workloads, assessment processes, student support services and institutional cultures to minimise unnecessary psychological pressures, while maintaining academic standards. Colleges’ mental health strategy should include optimism-enhancing activities such as mentoring, academic advising, peer support, career assistance, and realistic expectations about recovering from academic failures. Governments, higher education authorities, and institutions should create minimum criteria for mental health services, suicide prevention, crisis response, staff training, and referral systems, and tailor those requirements to local conditions and institutional capacities. This type of prevention of suicidal ideation requires a university-wide approach that combines academic policy, student aid, mental health treatment, and institutional accountability. “Quality, equitable and humane higher education must include safeguarding student well-being and keeping hope alive as part of its responsibility.”
