Abstract

Recent evolutions in emerging energy technologies illustrate that the transportation sector is undergoing tremendous changes in uptaking different models of vehicular systems. In the transportation area, hosting capacity implies the maximum number of hybrid electric vehicles that its incorporation into the power grid needs to not violate the grid’s operational limitations. However, the transportation research community suffers from the lack of review work to concisely and effectively clarify the hybrid electric vehicle’s hosting capacity and its related issues in transportation modernization. To fill this key gap, this review paper targets to accurately scrutinize hybrid electric vehicle hosting capacity, highlight its recent advancements and evolutions, discuss its technology developments, clarify its joint operation with numerous renewables, and investigate its energy-efficient interactions in modern grids. Indeed, this paper pursues the crucial goal of facilitating a successful transition from traditional vehicle networks to modern renewable-dominant transportation infrastructure. Its main achievement underlies rendering integration strategies with carbon-free resources for a simple understanding of the recent renewable-driven efforts conducted in the area of hybrid electric vehicle hosting capacity, their achievements, potential technology developments, and ongoing trends for their widespread presence in future modern transportation.
