Platforming the womb: GarbhSanskar Guru, archaic modernity, and the reproductive politics of an Ayurveda app

Abstract

GarbhSanskar Guru, a contemporary pregnancy and pregnancy-planning app, turns garbh sanskar into a daily interface of maternal instruction. It promises support – diet and lifestyle advice, baby bonding, trackers, live expertise and personalized activities – while organizing pregnancy as a scene of future-making in which maternal conduct is made responsible for heredity, virtue, intelligence, spirituality, culture and health. Grounded in English-language in-app pedagogical materials captured and archived by the author in 2024, when the relevant features were freely accessible, and read alongside public app pages, this essay argues that GarbhSanskar Guru translates archaic modernity into a platform-mediated form of reproductive governance. By archaic modernity I mean not a simple mixture of old and new, but a structure of mutual authorization: modern scientific vocabulary makes Hindu antiquity appear empirically true, while Hindu antiquity gives science a civilizational and moral purpose. In the app, that structure becomes practical. Garbh sanskar is described as a “Vedic science” for producing the “best child”; conception is explained through “23 chromosomes” while heredity is moralized; pregnancy becomes the “work of 90 years in 9 months”; and the foetus speaks through “Dear Mom” address. The essay shows how the interface converts plural medical inheritance into a pedagogy of ideal progeny whose caste-coding is produced through Sanskritic recitation, garbhadhana rites, cow-derived nourishment, food purity and domestic control. By centring one digital interface rather than Ayurveda as a whole, the essay asks how decolonial defences of traditional medicine can be captured by majoritarian reproductive futures while retaining the affective vocabulary of care.
