Özet (abstract)

The Coen brothers’ 1998 film, The Big Lebowski is a comic inversion of the thematic concerns, philosophical aspirations, character expectations and genre tropes common to film noir. It also engages the history of ideas in scattershot, ludicrous ways, underscoring a disregard for final meanings and a comic understanding of the instability of philosophical and political principles. It may cast doubt on the value of political principles altogether, especially when faced with large-scale ethical and political crises. Importantly, seen through a kind of genre camera obscura, in The Big Lebowski the darkness of noir reemerges upside down in the sun-soaked, bowling silliness of postmodern Los Angeles to enable us to think through the problem of subject agency in the face of war.With a consideration of reception theory, this essay builds its argument through an initial, extended reading of The Big Lebowski against Hamlet, using the various echoes of Hamlet to develop the analysis. The comparison to Hamlet, with its similar martial anxieties, similar concerns about the nature of the hero and similar problems of inaction, enables a formal reading of the film’s end where it transparently alludes to the Shakespeare play while manifesting its layered understanding of American military history.
