Abstract

The progressive and complex nature of chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases the risk of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) in these patients. The presence of PEM in CKD patients is associated with increased morbidity and mortality rates. This underscores the importance of adequate nutritional assessment and appropriate nutritional interventions. Nutritional therapy in CKD patients is focused on optimizing energy and protein intake, addressing micronutrient deficiencies and mitigating inflammation. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to developing personalized nutritional strategies that meet the unique needs of each patient. This chapter aims to elucidate the etiology, assessment, and management of malnutrition in CKD, thereby providing valuable insights for clinical practice.
