Abstract

Background: Stroke can result in anorectal dysfunctions for which pelvic physiotherapy (PF) is beneficial. Patients’ perceptions of this topic are often neglected. Aims: To analyze the perceptions of individuals with anorectal complaints after stroke regarding PF. Method: Qualitative study of individuals diagnosed with stroke. Interviews were conducted to discuss the role of PF in anorectal function. Responses were categorized into units of meaning and analyzed using the Bardin technique. Results: The sample consisted of 12 individuals aged 56.6 ± 5 years and 31.3 ± 12 months since diagnosis. All participants reported changes in bowel function (Bristol 1-2) that resulted in socioemotional and daily life changes. All were referred by health professionals; there was initial resistance due to lack of knowledge about the effectiveness of PF and embarrassment. After the sessions, all reported functional improvement (Bristol 3-5), in the evacuation pattern and in the quality of life. Conclusion: FP was perceived as effective, improved the evacuation pattern and had a positive impact on the quality of life in the physical, social, emotional and behavioral domains.
