What is an academic paper? Types, structure and how to read one

An academic paper reports the result of a study after other experts in the field have checked it. What sets it apart from a blog post, a news article or a textbook is not its subject but how it was published: it went through peer review, and it explains how the work was done clearly enough for someone else to repeat it.

Three things that make a text an academic paper

  • Peer review: before publication, at least two experts from the same field read, criticised and usually forced changes to the text. That does not guarantee it is right; it shows it was taken seriously.
  • A reproducible method: how the study was done, where the data came from and how it was analysed are stated clearly enough for someone else to do the same.
  • References: every claim is tied to the earlier work it rests on. The reference list is not a formality; it is the map of where the paper sits in the literature.

If all three are present, what you are reading is an academic paper. Without peer review it is not one yet, however scientific it looks.

Types of paper: know which one you are reading

Knowing the type tells you in advance what to expect:

  • Original research: new data, a new experiment, a new finding. Most of the literature is this.
  • Review: produces no new data; it collects and weighs the existing studies on a topic. When you enter a new field it is the first thing to read, because it summarises dozens of papers in one place.
  • Systematic review and meta-analysis: a review with strict rules. Which studies were included, and how they were chosen, is defined up front; a meta-analysis then combines their results statistically. In medicine and psychology this is treated as the strongest level of evidence.
  • Case reports, short communications, letters: narrow, fast-published formats. Valuable, but not enough on their own to support a general conclusion.
  • Preprint: a version the authors uploaded themselves, not yet peer-reviewed. Current, but unchecked; keep that in mind while reading.

The structure: IMRaD

The great majority of research papers share one skeleton, and it has a name: IMRaD. Introduction (what is the question, why does it matter), Methods (how it was done), Results (what came out) and Discussion (what it means, and its limits). An abstract sits at the front and the references at the back.

The useful part of the skeleton is this: because you know where each section is, you do not have to read the paper from start to finish.

How to understand a paper without reading all of it

Experienced readers read a paper in layers rather than in order:

  • Abstract first: question, method and main finding in one paragraph. For most papers you stop here.
  • Then the figures and tables: the real results live in the figures, not the prose. Reading the figure captions is worth half the results section.
  • Then the last paragraph of the discussion, and the limitations: the limits the authors put on their own work are more honest than any critic’s.
  • Methods last: only if you are going to rely on the finding. The methods section is written for specialists and is where most of the time goes.

Read in that order, “reading” a paper is usually ten minutes; going down to the methods, when you need to, is an hour.

Where to find them

Commonly confused

  • Paper vs. thesis: a thesis is a long, single-author work submitted to a university; it is not published in a peer-reviewed journal. Chapters of a thesis often become papers later.
  • Journal paper vs. conference paper: a conference paper is presented at a meeting; in computer science it counts as much as a journal paper, in other fields less.
  • Peer-reviewed vs. indexed: peer review is about the process; being indexed (Scopus, Web of Science) is about a journal being on a list. They are separate things, and how to verify a journal that claims both is covered elsewhere.
